Hey, It's Gina, your Original gal. I read a good book last night. It wasn't your average novel, it wasn't a mystery, no suspense, no horror. It was a love story. It's a love story written by many women who have been loved by one woman. Her name is DeDe and she opened her heart to help many.
But let me first tell you how I happened upon reading this book...
A few months ago, my life flipped, turned up side down. I fled an abusive relationship with my 4 small children to find comfort cross-country with my family. I had very little money, no confidence, no security, huge responsibilities, and an uncertain future. I was a refugee. The only things that gave me comfort were knowing I had my children with me, and that my family would be opening up their hearts and homes for us.
One day, with enough courage to explore my new surroundings, I stumbled upon a store. I think back and "stumbled" probably isn't the right word. I was led by God to arrive right where I did, right when I did. I parked the van in front of this little shop with an adorable little sign that said "Blessings".
I thought, "Boy, I could sure use some of those". The kids and I entered and I was instantly calmed and a feeling of safety came over me. I flipped when I noticed the prices, $1.99 for a baby dress! I could clothe my kids easily here, especially since the clothes were in such excellent condition, bonus! I learned about the purpose of the store, it was to help women just like me! Women in crisis, needing support, help to find housing, affordable house wares to rebuild their new safe apartment, and beautiful clothes to replace the ones they left behind in their haste. I was in awe. God led me here, to find support from a complete stranger, a stranger who would very quickly become my friend. Yesterday, almost 6 months after meeting DeDe, I hurried to her store to share with her my excitement and the stellar day I'd had. I wanted to celebrate and knew she of all people would rejoice with me. Over the months she has given support, encouragement, love and guidance right when I needed it. She is an angel in the city, her riches are being stored up in Heaven, and in the meantime, she joyfully receives donations and lovingly prices them with women in crisis in mind. All the proceeds go to help women needing a fresh start. It's a wonderful place to donate all your gently loved items. It's a wonderful place to find that one of a kind perfect treasure. Yesterday I decided that I was brave enough to try on some new jeans. If you're anything like me, I'd rather have a root canal than put myself through the torture of jeans shopping. However, after the stellar day I'd had, a new job starting soon, nearly 20 lb weight loss, and finally a bright future on the horizon, I dove into the jeans rack. I ended up with three of the most amazing jeans I have ever owned. The total was less than the average price of a new pair of retail priced jeans. How did I get so lucky?! I got really lucky with a new pair of Lucky Jeans, regularly close to $100, for only $8. This is the Heart of DeDe. She generously gives, so others can succeed. I am forever indebted to her for her kindness, love and joyful spirit. As I was checking out with my new skinny jeans, she encouraged me to read her journal. Women who have had memorable experiences like me have signed it. They all love her, and love what Blessings stands for. I added a little bit to the book too. I am in the group of loved ladies who loves her back. I can't wait until I can GIVE back, help someone in crisis, be a support system for him or her, let them know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Please, make the trip to see DeDe at Blessings. It's an experience that changed my life. Clean out your closets and bring them to her. It's for a great cause, a cause that is near and dear to my heart. And just as near and dear as she is. I know you will find the same peace that I did.
