Momma & Me & You!

Our beautiful heritage cookbook has taken us all over the country—including several trips to QVC where “Momma & Me & You” was a sell-out in its first airing!

Let me tell you a little bit about the cookbook.

Do the names Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Clark Gable, Guy Lombardo, Louis Prima, Jimmy Durante and Liberace sound family? Those were just a few of the celebrities that loved Momma’s cooking and the atmosphere at her famous restaurant, D’Atri’s at Lake Tahoe. Our cookbook is filled with the dishes she prepared for them. (Momma has never shared these recipes, by the way, until now!) And believe me, we tested and re-tested each recipe to make sure that you’ll be as successful as Momma was in the kitchen.

You’ll find all of her specialties like Momma’s Meatballs, Homemade Ravioli, Lasagna, Veal & Chicken Scaloppini, Eggplant Parmesana, Osso Buco, Minestrone, Tiramisu, Cannoli, Momma’s special Rum Cake, and so many more!

“Momma & Me & You” is also a wonderful compilation of our personal stories about growing up Italian and Momma’s childhood in Venice, Italy during WW2.

The beautiful cover is absolutely spill-proof! You can get oil, gravy, sauce, butter or any liquid on it, and it wipes right down. The inside pages are loaded with full-color original photos and one of my favorite features is that the pages lay flat when you open the book up to your favorite recipes. We want this to be the cookbook that gets used and enjoyed for years to come.  You can purchase our cookbook right here anytime and we would be honored to personalize it for you!

Excerpt from Cookbook:

I’ve hosted and produced seven television shows in my 29-year career, and Momma has been a part of just about every one. She has a natural born knack for teaching, and I have a natural born knack for teasing her and laughing as she scolds me about a particular cooking technique that I’m preventing her from sharing. She can fire right back at me, though, throwing out the sayings that have made Momma so memorable: “Hey! Janny, what’s good for the goose is good for the gondola!” We have fun together, and I think people enjoy our easygoing mother-daughter relationship. For the most part, we have similar styles of cooking, but when it comes to baking, we each have our own identities. Momma’s desserts are delicately crafted with the European flavors like rum, lemon zest and amaretto. Her crèmes are light and rich with her signature “made from scratch” quality. I tend to take more of a hearty art-like approach to desserts and have become passionate about my beautiful homemade pies filled with multiple layers of berries. We can’t wait for you try our recipes and, if you do happen to catch us cooking together on television, you’ll probably hear Momma say something like, “Janina, you’re just like your father-- a chipper off the older shoulder!”

About Momma

Momma. What can I say? She’s the real deal. She is a fantastic cook—“a practical cook” as she puts it, with such ability and creativity.  She’s known for possibly the best Cannelloni ever made and until now has never told anyone how she makes them. Momma’s food is amazing, but it’s always the love and laughter and stories we share over a good plate of pasta that makes the magic.

Born in Italy with six sisters, they learned from their mother how to make the daily pasta, stringing it over the kitchen chairs to dry. They carried buckets of seawater home to evaporate out the sea salt for the family. Momma rode her bicycle to the fish market to buy eel for stew and sometimes they would crawl out of the burlap bag and slithered up around her handlebars! Now there’s a sight.

Surviving World War II meant being creative with what you had and finding ways to feel  safe. Those terrible times left her with such a desire to create food that would both nourish the body as well as the soul. From such humble beginnings to a renowned restaurant that brought in countless movie stars, Momma has always used food to bring people together. Now through this cookbook we invite you to create some wonderful dishes and even better memories. Please enjoy and experiment and learn! Along the way you’re going to discover all the ways that food makes and creates and builds the bonds that will last a lifetime.
